- What are Attainment Tests?
They are non-competitive attainment tests. They work on a pass/fail system (like driving tests, life-saving certificate tests). The requirements for a pass are clearly defined. Success is usually rewarded in the award of a certificate.
- Why have Attainment Tests in Latin?
The Project's Graded Tests have for many years provided pupils with a series of manageable and worthwhile short-term goals and thereby increased their motivation. With many students now studying Latin for only one hour per week, we have introduce certification for the Stage 4 and 8 Attainment Tests to allow students to access certificated attainment at the rate of approximately one certificate per term.
- What tests are available for the Cambridge Latin Course?
Certificated Attainment Tests are available at the end of Stages 4 and 8 of Book I. The tests, together with a mark scheme, are available in the Teacher's area of the Book I E-Learning Resource DVD or the relevant Teacher's Guides.
- For which pupils are the tests designed?
The tests should be within the compass of the great majority of pupils taking the Course. The style of the Book I tests is particularly suitable for pupils aged 11-12. Teachers are free to select the tests they think appropriate for their particular pupils; there is no necessity for pupils to have taken the Stage 4 test before going on to the Stage 8 test.
- What form do the tests take?
Each test consists of a passage of Latin, written at the linguistic level of Stage 4 or Stage 8. Pupils are asked to translate the passage into English. Pupils must achieve a certain number of marks (60%) to pass the test and receive the Certificate. There are only two grades: pass and fail.
- How are they organised?
The relevant activities in the Teacher's area of the Book I E-Learning Resource DVD contain full instructions for administering and marking the tests. The teacher prints out the test, makes the required number of copies and gives the test to the pupils soon after they have reached the end of Stage 4 or 8. The teacher marks the test in accordance with the mark scheme supplied and presents a certificate to pupils who have passed the test. No moderation is required for Attainment Tests. Test certificates can be purchased from the Project Office at a cost of £5.00 for a pack of 10.
- Can one use the tests without joining the scheme?
Yes. The tests may be used as teachers think fit. Teachers are, however, asked to ensure that the test papers are collected to help maintain the security of the test.
- How much will the scheme cost?
The test papers and mark schemes are freely available within the Teacher's area of the Book I E-Learning Resource DVD or as part of the Teacher's Guides. Certicates may be purchased from the Project Office at a cost of £5.00 for a pack of 10.
